Press conference/unveiling *live blog*

I’m going to follow along, not because I think it will be riveting, but because I have to take notes anyway.

and we’ve got some action finally. (been staring at the Borg and reflections of people walking by it)

Briscoe, Power, Cindric & Castroneves have taken their seats.
(apparently the unveiling was earlier… oops)

Funny observation, Briscoe, Power & Cindric all have their hands on the desk in front of them, hands clasped. Helio has his hidden under the desk. A body language expert would have a field day with this.

“looking at it as 3 drivers for 2009″. (only 2 cars though, so you do the math)

They are all very well rehearsed in their answers/statements. (wouldn’t expect any less from the Penske org.)

and the microphone has cacked out just as Helio started speaking… nice. Conspiracy!!! (lol)

ok.. well, this isn’t working at all since I’m not a lip reader, this is a bit of a write off… oops… there we go. Missed a lot of talk though. Hopefully there will be a transcript.

Helio is maintaining his innocence.

Why is it that the guys asking the questions at these things sound like they are 104yrs old?

3rd car for the 500? evasive manuever on the answer by Cindric. In other words, if Helio is back, Will is SOL.

Ah yes, technical glitches galore as usual. I mean it’s not like they’ve had the entire OFF SEASON to prepare and improve and test the technology… :bangs head on desk:

hey, I know that voice! Howdy Robin!

Wow, this really sounds like a sucky deal for Will to be honest. It’s a bit of a crap shoot. If Helio get off Scott free, then Will is on the sidelines. period.

More evasive answers with regards to the details/length of the contract.

ugh… the sound is atrocious. My bonic hearing isn’t working today, so I’m having trouble hearing what little sound we are getting.

Robo Will! LOL! Didn’t understand one word of that, but it sounded hysterical.

and another 104yr old reporter asks the ‘foreigner” question.
ugh… get over it!
There are other countries besides the US that enjoy racing and produce fantastic drivers!

Trial length question: Indictment is about 20days. But no real idea how long this ordeal will last.

Hey! I know that voice too! Sounds like James Davison is doing a little moonlighting for an Aussie media outlet!

and that’s that… I’m not even going to attempt to transcribe my audio feed. I’ll just wait for the IndyCar version.

  1. Helio kept his hands under the table so nobody could see the handcuffs. Fun-tastic! Your observations on the incredible expert sound/video capabilities of IMS is why I always just wait for the transcript.

  2. Hmm.. maybe if Helio starts racing again during the year Will would go back to KVR and they’d throw out Mario Moraes. He seemed like an odd choice when they announced it, but it makes a bit more sense now..

  3. Alternatively KVR could run one car for Moraes and add a second one for Power if/when he returns.

  4. LOL P-dog! Proving yet again you are so much wiser than I…

Pat, Mario Moraes comes to KV with a giant sack of $$$$$. He ain’t going nowhere, no matter who becomes available. (unless they arrive with a bigger sack of money, which Will clearly didn’t have or he would already have a ride…)

  5. Meesh you hear anything on P.T and KV Racing having a deal in 2009?

  6. I think it makes total sense. Would wouldn’t want to jump into The Captain’s ride even if only for part of a season? I think if you’re Will, you have to believe you’re going to show your stuff and make your resume better for next year.

It’s not like there is an abundance of rides waiting around. Where else would he go?

Plus, I think PT’s stock rose a bunch when he jumped in cold and nearly put it on the podium. (Although, I guess we see what it got him…)

  7. I’m not sure why so few seem to get this deal. I keep hearing how this is such a bad deal for Will Power, because it is worded that if Helio returns he gets the seat. Well, what is being lost is that this is an issue of semantics. Penske does not want to deal with the bad press from A) Firing a driver who hasn’t been convicted B) A later wrongful termination lawsuit if Helio was fired and acquitted. Therefore, he has hired the replacement and is waiting until Helio is convicted to officially name Will Power to the drive. It’s a smart and savvy way of naming the driver already when everyone with any legal sense knows Helio has a 98% of going away. So, Penske gets to keep his organizations squeeky clean image and gets the good press for supporting Helio through the trial. While simultaneously signing his replacement.

  8. JC> I take everything to do with PT with a grain of salt after my rollercoaster ride last year. (that said I am crossing everything I can on his behalf)

    SciGuy> very true.

Michael> you are absolutely 100% correct on all of that, and I agree wholeheartedly. I guess some of us are just focused on the fact that the best case scenario for Helio turns into the worst case scenario for Will. (and vice-versa)

  9. It’s sad, but Helio sealed his fate I think. If he gets off I’m sure Will will have the chance at Indy at minimum which will be a great showcase for his talents in a premium ride.
